Not yet the end (2017) is part of a body of work produced for Tracey Emin’s exhibition 'A Fortnight of Tears’ at White Cube Bermondsey, London in 2017. Made shortly after her mother passed away, this assertive yet fluidly drawn composition, like most of Emin’s work, explores the birth, life, love and loss.
Emin has long been focused on the female form in both her two- and three-dimensional works and, in particular, on the themes of motherhood and sexuality. In this work, a prone figure lies on a wrought iron bed, sketchily rendered, fragile and full of pathos. Surrounded by shadowy mourners – including a figure to the left whose silhouette suggests a pregnant bulge – the bed is depicted at an impossible angle, as if about to launch skywards, tipped up for our perusal. With its suggestion of communication after death in the title, this mise-en-scène invokes both the temporal space of mourning as well as the communal intermingling of a séance.
