Untitled (fence, blue) (2018), an edition by Mona Hatoum, represents the pattern of a chain-link fence in hand-drawn lines. Hatoum often employs motifs of containment and incarceration in her works, using materials ranging from metal cages to wire mesh or barbed wire. Engaging the viewer in conflicting emotions of desire and revulsion, fear and fascination, Hatoum transforms familiar, everyday forms in ways that make them appear foreign. In this edition, the artist undermines the rigidity of the grid by softening the lines.

Untitled (fence, blue) belongs to a group of prints Hatoum created while on a residency with Edition Copenhagen and was initially exhibited in ‘Remains of the Day’, the artist’s solo show at White Cube Hong Kong in 2018. By subjecting solid objects to processes of imminent destabilisation, the artist renders them as ghostly shadows of what they once were, speaking to the instability of physical as well as political borders.
