In a group of lithographs created while on a residency with Edition Copenhagen in June 2018, Mona Hatoum made a series of grid-like patterns on Velin d’Arches paper. These works were included alongside large-scale installations and sculptures in her solo exhibitions at White Cube Hong Kong in 2018 and White Cube Bermondsey, London in 2019.
Hatoum often incorporates motifs of containment and incarceration in her sculptures and installations, drawing upon materials ranging from metal cages to reinforcement steel or barbed wire. The artist tends to break down the rigidity of such structures by introducing more vulnerable elements, emphasising the instability of physical as well as political borders. These ‘fence’ works contrast formal abstraction with a sense of the corporeal, as the lines are made less forbidding by the handmade appearance of the drawing.
